Frozen-themed Birthday Party

A Frozen-themed birthday party in the middle of summer sounds a bit odd, but a girl wants what a girl wants. One of our foster-daughters loved Frozen and wanted it to be the theme of her sixth birthday party. Since it was summer, it had to be a pool party, of course. Every girl received a party bucket with some treats, with more snacks on the table.

The table was decorated with a purple table cloth and some purple and blue balloons, to blend with the colours of the Frozen theme. On the table were the party buckets, snacks and beverages, as well as Frozen-themed plastic cups and polka dot plates.

The snacks included chips, popcorn and some baked goods:
  • Rice Kripsies treats - I created layers of the treats, from white to dark purple to fit with the Frozen theme. Keep in mind to use only white marshmallows when making this, not pink ones. I made the mistake of not letting the layers set properly before adding the next. By not waiting, the colours of the layers mixed, but it still was yummy!
  • Jelly treats - I made different coloured and flavoured jelly sheets, and placed them on top of each other. The timing is crucial, as each layer must be frozen enough but not too much, and once set, the new layer can be made and added on top. This is quite time-consuming but the kids loved these jelly treats.
  • Oreo cookies - I used vanilla flavoured Oreos and dunked half of each cookie in coloured chocolate, some in blue and others in purple.
    • A tip on melting chocolate: Melt chocolate on the stove on a very low heat (I never use a double boiler). Do not add anything to the chocolate, just be patient and stir regularly. Once the chocolate is melted, quickly dip the Oreos in the chocolate and place on a tray covered with wax paper. Place the cookies in the fridge for the chocolate to set.
  • S'more treats - The idea was to create little Olaf snowmen but since I ran out of time, it turned out to be melted snowmen, which at least still goes with the theme. I placed one marshmallow on a Marie biscuit and topped with a small piece of chocolate, then placed it in the oven for a few minutes. Once the marshmallows were puffed up a bit and the chocolate was melted slightly, I took them out of the oven and added the second Marie biscuit as a lid. Each lid was covered with white icing sugar glaze, topped with half a marshmallow as the hat of the snowman. Make sure you have enough time to make this, before ending up with melted snowmen.
  • For the beverages, we served fruit juice as well as Sprite. I poured the Sprite into a beverage dispenser and added some blue food colouring to create 'Frozen' water. The kids were very intrigued by the different colours.

For lunch we served hamburgers - quick and easy. My husband braaied the patties while socialising with the parents and other guests, while kids enjoyed a swim before eating lunch. Everyone could then build their own burger and add sauce and garnish to their taste.

I baked a Frozen cake. Baking the cake and buying the Frozen (Elsa) doll was the easy part. The cake had three layers, each one cut smaller to create a triangle dress shape, filled with caramel between the layers (yes, I love caramel and cake). The idea was to make Elsa's dress range from dark purple at the top to lighter towards the bottom, finishing off with white (as you can see it turned out yellow). The kids, however, were impressed by the Elsa cake, and after the cake was devoured, our foster-daughter had a new Frozen doll.
