I had the privilege of organising a 1st birthday party for our foster-daughter. Her favourite soft toy was Dumbo, so I decided to go with a Dumbo-themed birthday party. The main colour was purple, with a purple table cloth, banner flags and Dumbo-themed balloons. The snacks included chips, shortbread biscuits, mini sausage rolls as well as cheese pastries, marmite tartlets, savoury quiche bites and vanilla cupcakes with purple icing. Choices for beverages were soft drinks or various fruit juices. Some Dumbo paper plates, -cups and balloons rounded it all off. An old wooden cot, a family heirloom, was used as the 'gifts table'. Since the birthday party was in the middle of winter, we served warm butternut soup for lunch, which was a great hit. It was served in polystyrene cups, which was great to drink the soup out of. Perhaps the most important for the kids, was the cake! It was a vanilla cake with caramel between the layers, and I tried to decorate the cake with a Dumbo picture. Although not the best piece of art, I was quite proud to have managed to make something somewhat representing an elephant. Our foster-daughter's name was on top of the cake in purple with some edible glitter. The Invitation
