Birthday celebrations with my parents was the day after my 80's birthday party. Since there were ingredients left over from the night before, I made welcome drinks which were piña colada-inspired, with some pieces of frozen pineapple in it. These were non-alcoholic, but for those who wanted a kick, rum was available - to add at own discretion. Light snacks were also served before lunch, which included crackers, a biltong dip and some grapes. For lunch, we went all out. My husband braaied chicken, boerewors and bacan sosaties (one of my favourites!). The meat was served with olive ciabatta, which I heated in the oven, cauliflower cheese bake (which is always a hit with guests - even my little sister who doesn't really like cauliflower loved it!) and butternut and beetroot salad, with pumpkin seeds and some nuts - a salad which goes well with any kind of meat. I made crème brulée for dessert... And people wanted more! The main reason for this was to use the blow torch my parents gave me for one Christmas. I read somewhere that crème brulée was a hit in the 80's, which was a happy coincidence to go with the theme of my party the night before. It took some time to caramalise the sugar on top of 9 desserts with only one blow torch, but it was worth the wait!
